One in five teachers is uncomfortable discussing LGBT+ issues with pupils. As a teacher from the LGBT community, my ears pricked up yesterday when youth charity Just Like Us published the results of a poll of 6,179 primary and secondary school teachers.
Mermaids is arguably the most influential charity focusing on transgender rights in the UK. It claims to have been supporting transgender, non-binary and gender-diverse children, young people, and their families since 1995, and has been at the forefront of key policy changes affecting transgender people in this country. Today, however, the charity is distinctly evangelistic.
Keira Bell is a name that will be remembered. Like Victoria Gillick before her, she argued in the High Court that minors could not consent to certain medical treatment. But that is where their paths differ. In 1983, Gillick lost when the High Court ruled that girls under 16 could be prescribed birth control without parental consent.
The British state broadcaster regularly pushes content on complex gender issues, much of it targeted at a young audience, across its various platforms. Children need protecting from this dangerous, irresponsible approach.
On Thursday, teachers planning residential trips were told that it was just fine for teenagers of the opposite sex to share a room.

The charity is supposed to help vulnerable children, which is why it rightly opposes FGM. So why is it promoting the idea that it’s OK for girls as young as seven to go down a path that leads to gender reassignment surgery?
